One of the objectives of the SDC is to develop the human resources in the Member States in the area of information science/technology/management/systems/services so as to prepare the region for the impending new information era. Towards this end, SDC conducts a number of training programmes, as under:
  1. Short Term Training Course (ST) on IT*
  2. Short Term Training Course (STHT) on Herbarium Techniques
  3. Attachment Training Course (AT)*
  4. Associateship in Information Science (AIS)*
  5. Workshops / Seminars*

    * These programmes are specifically designed for Librarians and Information Professionals.
1. Short Term Training Course (ST) on IT

The course aims at exposing the participants to latest developments in information management. The Course title is "Information Technology for Information Management" for 5 weeks and 02 participants are nominated from each SAARC Member States.

2. Short Term Training Course (STHT) on Herbarium Techniques

The course aims at exposing the participants to Herbarium Techniques. The Course title is "Herbarium Techniques" for 1 week and 01 participant is nominated from each SAARC Member State.

3.Attachment Training Course (AT)

This is a specialised programme in the areas related to application of Information Technology in Information Management. The Course title is "Information Technology for Information Management" for 3 months and 01 participant is nominated from each SAARC Member States.

Nominations for Short Term and Attachment Courses:

Each SAARC Member Country can nominate up to two participants & one alternate for Short Term course in IT and one participants & one alternate for attachment training course. Each SAARC Member Country can also nominate up to one participant for Short Term course in Herbarium Techniques. A brief resume of the nominee containing the following details may be forwarded to SDC through SAARC Secretariat at least three weeks before the commencement of the programme:
  • Present Working Organization
  • Experience
  • Write-up on the possible usefullness of the course to the nominee and his/her organization.
* Nominations will be accepted only through SAARC Secretariat, Kathmandu, Nepal

 

How to apply

The applications of candidates of SAARC countries other than India may be sent to: Coordinator, SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC), NISCAIR Building, 14-Satsang Vihar Marg, New Delhi-110067, through SAARC Secretariat in the prescribed application format, at least 3 weeks before the start of the courses.

ST Course on Information Technology

ICT to Library & Information Activities, Introduction to Computers (Basic & Hardware), Operating Systems: windows 2000, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint, Database Design Concepts/RDBMS Concepts, SQL Server, VB .Net, WINISIS, Internet Technology, DTP, Web page Designing, Demo CD-ROM Databases, Granthalaya, BARCODE Technology, RFID, Networking Technology, Intranets, IPR, E-Journals, Digital/Virtual Libraries and Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL).

ST Course on Herbarium Techniques

Herbarium and its functions; Role of herbarium in research, education and Protection of environment; Method of Plant Collection; Techniques of documentation of information on plants; Plant Identification Techniques; Plant nomenclature; Methods of plant processing; Methods of plant preservation; Techniques of Herbarium database preparation; Herbarium Management, etc.

Course Fee

SDC will bear the cost of training including the cost of course material, working lunch, tea, etc.

 

Local Hospitality

SDC will provide local hospitality for the participants, which includes free accommodation, an allowance of Rs. 400/- per day for the period of stay in Delhi and transport from guest house to the venue and back.
SDC does not provide for medical insuarance and sight seeing trips. However, transport for airport pickup and drop would be provided by the SDC.

4. Associateship in Information Science (AIS)

The host institution NISCAIR has been offering an advanced Master’s dgree level academic course in information science named Associateship in Information Science. The SDC has been sponsoring candidates from the Member States for the AIS course. The SDC provides the students with free accommodation and living expenses during their stay at the host institution for the duration of the course.
Persons having a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in (i) Master’s degree or (ii) four-year plus degree like B.E./M.B.B.S. or (iii) Bachelor’s  degree plus B.Lib.Sc. plus one year of relevant experience after B.Lib.Sc. are eligible to apply.

5. Workshops / Seminars

A workshop in the year 2008:
"Integration of ICT in LIS and Emerging IPR Issues"

It was proposed in fifth NFP-SDC Coordinators Meeting that a workshop be organised on 'Integration of ICT in LIS and Emerging IPR Issues' in the year 2008. Which was agreed upon by all the Coordinators present. In the 13th GB Meeting it was decided that India will host the workshop in 2008.
