South Asian farmers forum set up

For addressing the problems faced by the agriculture sector in the South Asian region, setting up of South Asian Farmers Forum was announced here. It will hold its maiden meet in Pakistan in September this year. Suresh P Prabhu, former Union minister for power, announced the formation of the forum at the concluding session of the first-ever international conference of SAARC countries titled Science based agricultural transformation towards alleviation of hunger and poverty. ......

Significant part of SAARC summit shifted from Kandy to Colombo

A significant part of the forthcoming summit of South Asian heads of government would be shifted from Kandy in central Sri Lanka, to the capital city of Colombo, for logistic and other reasons, an official said. A significant section of the summit will be held in Colombo for logistic and other reasons. A formal statement to this effect will be made later, Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona told IANS Sunday. The Sunday Times had quoted foreign ministry spokesman Ravinatha Aryasinha as saying the shift was necessitated by considerations of security, mobility and accommodation.......

Sri Lanka to host 15th SAARC summit

The 15th summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to be held in the Sri Lankan city of Kandy from July 27 this year, is likely to see Irans participation as an observer nation. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse visited Kandy yesterday to review all facilities and security arrangements for the summit, a Sri Lankan government official told news agency Press Trust of India Tuesday at the capital city Colombo.......

SAARC Music festival

A three-day musical extravaganza featuring 14 rock bands from SAARC countries was kicked off here on Friday with much fanfare.External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the maiden edition of SAARC Bands Festival aimed at promoting cultural exchange among the eight member countries and giving exposure to young artistes from the region.......

Project office for SAARC university by year-end

In an attempt to strengthen the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the last SAARC Summit had proposed a common university. The university dedicated totally to the students from the eight member countries of SAARC is slated to come up in Delhi by 2009. ......

Dwarka chosen as location for upcoming Saarc varsity

DWARKA, a suburb of Delhi, has emerged as the preferred location for the South Asia University (SAU) to be set up over the next two years.
